    Laudatores Temporis Acti, or Why Cosmology is Alive and Well - A Reply to Disney

    A recent criticism of cosmological methodology and achievements by Disney (2000) is assessed. Some historical and epistemological fallacies in the said article have been highlighted. It is shown that---both empirically and epistemologically---modern cosmology lies on sounder foundations than it is portrayed.     Effects of Different Pelleted Diets and Pellet Size on Bird Performance

    An experiment investigated performance of birds fed the pelleted corn-soy diet versus the pelleted 30% copra meal based diet with different pellet sizes. This study was conducted for six weeks. A total of 144 male day old chicks were used in this trial. One day old birds were randomly allocated to four treatment diets with six replications. The starter and grower pelleted diets were with or without 30% copra meal and in two forms, either fine or mixed sized particles. The experimental design was a two way factorial with two basal diets, two particle sizes and six replicate cages of six birds per treatment. The inclusion of 30% copra meal in the pelleted diet decreased body weight and feed intake, but improved feed eficiency. Grinding the diet to a fine pellet size impaired the body weight and feed intake. The effect of pellet size became more evident when the birds grew older. Birds fed the pelleted form of copra meal accelerated their growth rate so that they were not significantly different from the weight of birds fed the pelleted form of the corn-soy diet. However the feed intake of birds fed the pelleted copra meal diet was lower than the feed intake of those fed the pelleted corn soy diets. It was concluded that inclusion of copra meal in the diet impaired growth of birds, particularly in the starter phase. Pelleting and crumbling copra meal diet could increase the bird performance to the same level of the performance of birds fed the pelleted corn-soy control diet while fine grinding the pelleted diet reversed this trend.     Inhibition of Tendon Cell Proliferation and Matrix Glycosaminoglycan Synthesis by Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs in vitro

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of some commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) on human tendon. Explants of human digital flexor and patella tendons were cultured in medium containing pharmacological concentrations of NSAIDs. Cell proliferation was measured by incorporation of 3H-thymidine and glycosaminoglycan synthesis was measured by incorporation of 35S-Sulphate. Diclofenac and aceclofenac had no significant effect either on tendon cell proliferation or glycosaminoglycan synthesis. Indomethacin and naproxen inhibited cell proliferation in patella tendons and inhibited glycosaminoglycan synthesis in both digital flexor and patella tendons. If applicable to the in vivo situation, these NSAIDs should be used with caution in the treatment of pain after tendon injury and surgery

    Resistance of three different populations of mulberry silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) to Bacillus thuringiensis

    The relative resistance levels of three different populations of mulberry silkworm, Bombyx mori L. to Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) has been studied. All three populations (two Australian and one Indonesian) were observed for similar characteristics including 3rd instar larval mortality at 24, 48, 72 and 96 h after treatment (HAT), LD50 ratio and probit mortality. Among the Australian two populations, the QuBill (yellow coloured, oval shaped cocoon) population showed higher larval mortality to Bt toxicity compared to the QuBite (white coloured, oval shaped cocoon) population. When all the populations were compared, the Insab (Indonesian population with white Coloured, peanut shaped cocoon) showed lower larval mortality and highest LD50 ratio up to 48 HAT. The Insab population also showed a 24 It longer incubation/latent period prior to the start Of Mortality

    Assessment of possible environmental effects of space shuttle operations

    The potential of shuttle operations to contribute to atmospheric pollution is investigated. Presented in this interim report are results of the study to date on rocket exhaust inventory, exhaust interactions, dispersion of the ground cloud, detection and measurement of hydrochloric acid and aluminum oxide, environmental effects of hydrochloric acid and aluminum oxide, stratospheric effects of shuttle effluents, and mesospheric and ionospheric effects of orbiter reentry. The results indicate space shuttle operation will not result in adverse environmental effects if appropriate launch constraints are met
